Adam Makarenko

I recently discovered the work of Adam Makarenko, a photographer who has created a series of photographs called “The Miniature Apiary.” The series is based in part on a story he wrote entitled “The Langstroth Range” - a fable about a hidden valley and a breed of super-bees that become exploited by humans. The photos, which in fact are not pictures of actual bees but miniature dioramas that Adam Makarenko created himself, have an other-worldly, surreal and at times ominous quality to them. With colony collapse disorder and global warming on the minds of many, there could hardly be a better time for such a theme.

Adam won the “American Photo of the Year” award from Popular Photography magazine for his bee-themed photos. The Popular Photography website states:

Adam Makarenko is obsessed with bees. And he’s the first to admit it. “I’m fascinated first by the collective intelligence of bees,” the Toronto-based photographer explains.

Honey & Bee news

Just as I was lamenting a lack of honey & bee-related news lately, my e-mail inbox got flooded with such news.

1. Check out these awesome solid, portable honey drops. Honey on the go! I like.

2. There is an Urban Beekeeping Day on Saturday in the Bronx. I really wish it wasn’t a two-hour trip (each way) via public transportation from my little old hive.

3. Starbucks now has a honey latte. A good way to get your “buzz” on. Sorry, I can’t resist a bad pun.
