Upcoming: LCD Soundsytem + Arcade Fire

I am beyond excited that I have tickets to see LCD Soundsytem (never seen them live before) and Arcade Fire (seen them live twice before) on October 6th at Randall’s Island.

BUT - Randall’s Island? Really?! Is this show going to be outside? In October? What’s the deal? Does anyone know? If so, please leave a comment.

The last time this old lady set foot on Randall’s Island it was for Lollapalooza 1995. That lineup included Sonic Youth, Hole, and Beck. Oh, the alterna-ness.

UPDATE: Apparently there is, in fact, a stadium on Randall’s Island. Hey, like I said, it’s been a long time since I’ve been there.

Bee Movie

This weekend, the husband and I saw a matinee showing of the Simpsons movie (luckily not at the world’s worst movie theater, which I am  boycotting for life). The film was very funny - despite having to wait outside under an awning that smelled like piss during pouring rain; receiving the previous night’s popcorn, which was cold and stale; and having a child squirm and kick in the seat next to me for 90% of the movie.

But the biggest excitement of yesterday’s movie-going experience was seeing the preview for Bee Movie - I can’t wait to see this! It’s an animated film with Jerry Seinfeld as a bee named Barry B. Benson. The plot of the movie is that Barry the bee challenges the conventions of the bee lifestyle, not being content to eke out his life producing honey and shocked to find that humans have been stealing the bees’ honey for all these years. I’m looking forward to an immense number of bee jokes. It’s like this movie was made just for me!

House of Bees

Temple of Sting applauds the decision of Matthew Danchanko, who refuses to exterminate the honeybees which have taken up residence in his house:

JEROME, Pa. (AP) _ A constant hum fills the air as the residents of Matthew Danchanko’s new home obstinately refuse to leave.
Shortly after Danchanko, 26, began renovating the four-bedroom
house in Conemaugh Township, he discovered tens of thousands of honeybees in the walls.
Visitors can’t miss the bees. They create a low hum and the
sweet scent from an estimated 100 pounds of honey fills the air
when the wind is blowing in the right direction.
“You can hear them, sometimes you can smell the honey. It’s
pretty wild,” Danchanko told the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat.
Danchanko wants the insects to leave his home, but he refuses to exterminate, as he is aware that the honeybee population in
Pennsylvania and 21 other states has significantly deteriorated in
the past year.
Danchanko found a local beekeeper who pledged to collect the
bees and find them new digs.
“I am not going to kill the honeybees,” Danchanko said. “If I
have to, I’ll suit up myself and remove the bees.”

Temple of Sting’s new favorite band

It’s true that I was originally attracted to the band The Bird and the Bee because they have the word “bee” in their name. But ever since I downloaded their self-titled debut album, I’ve hit the “play” button over and over on my I-pod.

Sting to Pay $50k to Chef for Wrongful Dismissal!

Really, the following speaks for itself. No comment from me is even needed in this case.

LONDON, July 17 (Reuters) - A British employment tribunal ordered rock star Sting and his wife Trudie Styler to pay $50,000 in compensation on Tuesday for wrongfully dismissing their former chef.

Jane Martin, who cooked for Sting and his family at their
country estate in England, filed a claim in July last year
saying she had been sacked by Styler after revealing she was
pregnant.

The tribunal found the couple guilty of sexual
discrimination and awarded Martin 24,944 pounds ($50,000), a
tribunal spokeswoman said.

A spokesman for Styler said an appeal had been lodged and
that the hearing had displayed bias against Sting’s wife.
“It remains Trudie’s position that she, as a woman and a
mother, has never in her life sexually discriminated against
anyone and never would do so,” he added.
Martin, 41, was employed by the celebrity couple for nearly
eight years, earning around $55,000 a year.

As well as cooking for the family, she often prepared meals
for their famous friends and guests, including Madonna and Elton
John.

But Martin told the tribunal things started to go wrong
after she told Styler she was pregnant in 2005. She said Styler
frequently made excessive demands and at one point became angry because she took time off.

Styler, Martin said, had been overheard to say: “She’s my
chef in the UK. She needs to be available if I need her, or she
should rethink her position.”
Martin, who was employed by the couple’s management company,
Lake House Estate, said she also stopped receiving expensive
presents on her birthday, getting flowers for her 40th whereas
previously she had been given watches and jewelery.

Bees in the News

Today there are several articles online about bees and colony collapse disorder (CCD).

The Wall Street Journal article “Gardens With a Buzz” focuses on gardening to attract honeybees, and features a great video of a woman demonstrating specific techniques to attract honeybees to your garden, should you happen to reside in one of those crazy areas I hear about where people have more than 2 square feet of space to live in (unlike those of us who live in New York City). The article reports that many people are turning their yards into bee-friendly habitats by “shunning pesticides, planting flowers that bees like, and even creating nesting sites for the beleaguered insects.”

Also online today is a Slate article “Bee Not Afraid” which asks “is CCD such a tragedy?” The author believes that honeybees in North America have already been made nearly extinct by varroa destructor mites. She makes some very good points about practices that may have helped contribute to the vulnerability of the bee population (such as the use of high fructose corn syrup, rather than pollen, in beehives by commercial beekeepers) and succinctly lists all the theories of why CCD is happening - “pesticides, parasites, global warming, chilly larvae, ultraviolet light, not enough pollen, not enough rain, cell phones, and alien spaceships.” Ultimately, though, Temple of Sting must disagree with her premise that CCD is really no big deal.

Urban Beekeeping

story.jpgCheck out this great Salon.com article by Lenora Todaro on urban beekeeping. Sadly, keeping bees in NYC is illegal… not to mention the lack of space… although I know of several amateur rooftop beekeepers in Brooklyn. There’s also quite a bit in the article about Colony Collapse Disorder, including this bit of wisdom: “[The bees’] disappearance is a referendum on the state of our environment — a reminder of the brilliant and frightening interdependence of our ecosystem.”

Al Gore hanging out with Sting

According to the Daily News, even Al Gore has fallen under Sting’s spell!

If Al Gore runs for Prez again, he can count on at least one rocker’s vote.

At Sting ’s Central Park West pad Sunday, the veep-turned-environmentalist introduced himself to guests gathered hours after the Live Earth concert ended. “My name is Al Gore,” he said, “and I’m a recovering politician.”

“Then fall off the wagon!” called out Stewart Copeland, drummer for the Police.

Sting is a sissy!

I saw Sting on this arts channel we have here… it’s all dance and classical music and stuff, and there was a program on where Sting came out of this brightly lit doorway wearing only a pair of what looked like hemp pants or something… no shirt no shoes… then sat down crossed legged and started playing acoustic guitar while a flaky dancer came out doing some weirdo interpretative dance. and then he stopped playing and just got up and walked out his brightly lit door and into the light… like an angel. What a douche!

Sting at Live Earth

Bee-lieve it or not, Sting and I (the Queen Bee) actually have a few things in common. We both like yoga. We both care about the environment.

As I’m sure you are aware by now, Sting is playing with the reunited Police at the Live Earth concert this weekend. But, as today’s New York Times article astutely points out, “Live Earth joins a long history of mega-events in which the spectacle can sometimes overshadow the cause, and promises made under the spotlights can be hard to keep in the long term” and “Environmental bloggers questioned the need for big, energy-gorging concerts. News reports pointed out that performers would be making trips around the world in exhaust-spewing jets, and that some of them (Kanye West, Sheryl Crow) have songs in S.U.V. commercials.”

Not to mention that Sting himself had a song in a Jaguar commercial.

Temple of Sting believes that, in fact, Sting is one of the main causes of global warming. The tremendous amount of hot air coming out of the man is directly affecting the temperature of the earth. No, I don’t have scientific proof - yet. But I think Sting’s participation in Live Earth is an attempt to cover up his true, evil nature!
